Kathy Richardson, Program Director

Kathy Richardson is a highly influential figure in early childhood math education. Kathy began her career as a classroom teacher and went on to develop and lead professional development courses for teachers, speak at national conferences, contributed articles to professional journals, developed assessments and other resources for teachers and is the author of more than twenty books.

She is primarily recognized for her work on developing “Number Talks” as a classroom practice, her deep understanding of how young children develop mathematical concepts and for her comprehensive, formative assessment tool “Assessing Math Concepts” which helps teachers identify critical learning phases in early math development. She has written more than twenty books including her Developing Number Concepts series, which is widely utilized by teachers and school districts across the nation. Additionally, her book, How Children Learn Number Concepts: A Guide to the Critical Learning Phases is employed in colleges and universities nationwide and is considered essential for elementary teachers and admin. Today, she continues her study of how young children develop number concepts while working as the Program Director of Math Perspectives Teacher Development Center, which she co-founded in Bellingham, Washington in 1998.

Sheryl Russell, Administrative Director

As Co-Founder and Administrative Director of Math Perspectives, Sheryl Russell oversees all of the day-to-day operations of the company. With her years of organizational and management experience, she works with School and District Administrators to schedule and arrange their professional development plans with Math Perspectives.


Math Perspectives Instructor Team

Math Perspectives’ professional development helps schools and school districts become on-going learning organizations that directly and ultimately benefit students. Our own team of staff members and instructors is made up of a group of life-long learners.

Our course instructors are highly qualified teachers with years of classroom and leadership experience. They use our teaching strategies in their own classrooms and are prepared to address the challenges teachers have when making changes to improve mathematics instruction. They have extensive experience in professional development settings in their own school as well as nationwide.
